Atiku’s US Lobbyist Alleges Political Intimidation, Plans Trump Briefing

WASHINGTON — Atiku Abubakar’s United States-based lobbyist has accused the Nigerian government of political intimidation, alleging a growing pattern of actions that could weaken democratic processes ahead of the 2027 elections in Nigeria.

The lobbyist, speaking on behalf of the former Nigerian vice president, raised concerns over what he described as increasing pressure on opposition voices and political actors, warning that the situation could undermine democratic stability if not addressed.

The allegations specifically targeted the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which the lobbyist accused of creating an environment that restricts political competition and threatens democratic freedoms.

He further claimed that the alleged intimidation reflects a broader trend that could affect fairness and transparency as Nigeria moves closer to its next general election cycle in 2027.

According to the statement, the lobbyist is considering escalating the matter internationally, including briefing prominent political figures such as former United States President Donald Trump, in order to draw global attention to the situation.

The Nigerian government has not issued an official response to the allegations at the time of reporting.

Political analysts note that international lobbying efforts are often used by political stakeholders to shape global narratives and influence diplomatic attention on domestic political issues.

The development comes amid increasing political positioning among major figures ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition camps seeking stronger visibility both locally and internationally.

Observers say such allegations, whether verified or disputed, often intensify political debate and place additional scrutiny on government institutions.

They also caution that claims involving intimidation and democratic weakening require careful examination to separate political messaging from factual developments.

As political tensions gradually rise ahead of the next election cycle, attention is expected to remain on how both domestic actors and international stakeholders respond to these emerging narratives.
