Tension gripped the United States capital on Saturday evening after a gunman opened fire close to the White House security perimeter, prompting an immediate armed response from the United States Secret Service that ended with the suspect being shot dead.
The dramatic incident unfolded just after 6:00 p.m. local time near the heavily protected presidential complex in Washington, D.C., sending tourists, journalists and nearby residents scrambling for safety as gunshots rang through the area.
According to officials, the suspect allegedly removed a firearm from a bag and began firing near the White House grounds, triggering a rapid counter operation by security agents stationed around the presidential residence.
The Secret Service confirmed that officers returned fire within moments of the attack, striking the suspect during the exchange. The unidentified gunman was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
In an official statement released shortly after the incident, Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi disclosed that one civilian was also injured during the shooting.
He explained that the bystander suffered gunshot wounds amid the chaos and was immediately taken for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the condition or identity of the injured civilian.
Security officials confirmed that none of the Secret Service agents involved in the operation sustained injuries.
United States President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House during the incident. Reports indicated that the president was participating in high level discussions related to ongoing diplomatic negotiations involving Iran when the gunfire erupted outside the complex.
Following the attack, Trump praised federal security agencies for what he described as a quick and professional response that prevented a potentially more devastating situation.
In a statement shared on his Truth Social platform early Sunday morning, the president commended Secret Service personnel and law enforcement officers for neutralizing the threat.
Trump stated that the suspect reportedly had a violent background and may have harbored an obsession with the White House, which he described as one of America’s most symbolic national landmarks.
Several American media outlets later identified the suspect as 21 year old Nasire Best from Maryland. Preliminary reports suggested that the young man had previously experienced mental health related issues and may have had prior encounters with security authorities.
Federal investigators have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the shooting, although multiple agencies have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The incident sparked widespread panic across downtown Washington as heavily armed officers, federal agents and National Guard personnel flooded the area and sealed off roads surrounding the White House.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as dozens of people fled after hearing repeated gunshots.
A Canadian tourist identified as Reid Adrian recounted the frightening moment, saying the sounds initially resembled fireworks before people suddenly realized gunfire had erupted nearby.
According to Adrian, panic spread almost instantly as crowds began running away from the area in search of safety.
Journalists covering activities at the White House also found themselves caught in the emergency situation.
Members of the press gathered on the North Lawn were reportedly instructed to immediately seek cover inside the White House briefing room while security teams secured the area.
Among those present was ABC News correspondent Selina Wang, who was recording a social media video when the shooting began.
The sudden burst of gunfire was reportedly captured during the recording as Wang quickly dropped to the ground for protection.
She later described the incident on social media, saying the scene sounded like dozens of gunshots exploding one after another near the White House grounds.
Saturday’s shooting has once again intensified concerns over security threats facing Trump and the growing pattern of politically charged violence in the United States.
The latest incident comes amid heightened fears following previous assassination attempts and security breaches involving the president.
In July 2024, a gunman attacked a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one attendee and injuring several others, including Trump, whose ear was grazed by a bullet during the shooting.
Months after that incident, another armed suspect was arrested near a golf course in West Palm Beach where Trump was spending time.
Political leaders and lawmakers reacted quickly to Saturday’s events, with several House Republicans expressing gratitude to security operatives for protecting the president and those around the White House.
In a statement shared online, the lawmakers condemned political violence and thanked the Secret Service for what they described as heroic action during the emergency.
Security experts say the latest attack could further accelerate plans to reinforce the White House complex and expand protective infrastructure around the presidential residence.
Trump has previously defended controversial renovation and expansion projects tied to the White House, including reports of a multi million dollar ballroom development expected to feature underground security facilities and advanced anti drone systems.
Federal authorities have assured the public that investigations remain ongoing and that additional details regarding the suspect, the injured bystander and the sequence of events will be released as inquiries continue.
