Hollywood veteran John Travolta has opened up about navigating grief and finding hope following the heartbreaking loss of his son, Jett, and his wife, Kelly Preston, revealing that his latest film is deeply rooted in those personal experiences.
In a recent interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the 72-year-old actor reflected on how life’s challenges have shaped his outlook, emphasizing his decision to embrace light despite enduring profound pain.
“I’m not made to remain absorbed in the darkness,” Travolta said. “I can look at the darkness, but I don’t choose to die in that darkness.”
Travolta has faced immense personal tragedy over the years. His son, Jett, died in 2009 at the age of 16 after suffering a seizure, while his wife, Kelly Preston, passed away in 2020 at 57 following a battle with breast cancer.
Channeling his grief into creativity, the actor revealed that his new film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, is dedicated to his late son, wife, parents, and siblings.
“They are the model from which this film was born,” he said.
The semi-autobiographical project draws inspiration from Travolta’s childhood, particularly his first flight experience. Set in 1962 America, the story is told through the eyes of an eight-year-old boy named Jeff and explores complex historical themes while maintaining a child’s perspective.
Adding to its emotional depth, Travolta’s daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, also stars in the film, making it a deeply personal family project.
Through the film and his reflections, Travolta continues to demonstrate resilience, choosing to honor his loved ones by transforming loss into storytelling and hope.
