LAGOS, Nigeria — The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the suspension of its Lagos-Apapa train service for three weeks starting July 6 to allow for essential maintenance work on the rail line, a move that will affect thousands of commuters relying on the route.

The corporation disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, explaining that the temporary shutdown was necessary to carry out critical repairs and upgrades to the track infrastructure. The Lagos-Apapa corridor is one of the busiest rail routes in the country, serving workers and businesses in the Apapa industrial area.

According to the NRC, the maintenance work will involve track realignment, replacement of worn-out sleepers, and inspection of signalling systems. The corporation assured that the exercise is aimed at improving safety and service reliability on the route, which has experienced operational challenges due to ageing infrastructure.

Passengers who rely on the Lagos-Apapa train service have been advised to use alternative mass transit options during the suspension period. The NRC urged commuters to make use of buses and other public transport services available along the corridor, while also noting that arrangements were being made to provide temporary relief measures.

The Lagos-Apapa train service is a key transport link for workers commuting between the city centre and the Apapa port area, and its suspension is expected to cause significant disruption to daily routines. The NRC appealed for patience and understanding from the public, noting that the maintenance work is in the long-term interest of commuters.

The corporation also stated that it would provide regular updates on the progress of the maintenance work and the resumption of services. Passengers have been advised to monitor the NRC’s official communication channels for further information.

The suspension comes amid ongoing efforts by the federal government to modernise the country’s railway infrastructure, with several upgrade projects underway across the network. The Lagos-Apapa line is a critical part of the national rail system, facilitating the movement of goods and people between Lagos and the Apapa port, which handles a significant portion of Nigeria’s imports and exports.

The NRC has assured that every effort will be made to complete the maintenance work within the three-week period and to ensure that services resume as scheduled. The corporation also reiterated its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient rail services to Nigerians.

As the July 6 start date approaches, commuters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to explore alternative transport options to avoid being stranded. The NRC has also called on the public to cooperate with officials during the maintenance period to ensure a smooth and successful exercise.
