Music producer and executive, Don Jazzy, has urged men to prioritise paternity of their children, stating that it is more important than a naming ceremony.

On his Instagram story, Don Jazzy emphasised: “DNA test is more important than naming ceremony.”

His statement comes amid ongoing debates in Nigeria about the necessity of DNA tests, fuelled by recent high-profile cases of paternity fraud.

What is DNA testing?

DNA testing, also known as genetic testing or analysis, examines an individual’s DNA to identify genetic disorders, determine ancestry, establish paternity or maternity, solve crimes, and identify genetic traits.

Various types of DNA tests exist, including paternity, maternity, genetic disorder, ancestry, forensic, gene expression, and whole genome sequencing tests.

These tests involve collecting a sample through blood, saliva, or tissue, extracting and amplifying specific segments, analyzing the sequences or patterns, and interpreting the results.

DNA testing has numerous applications, including medical diagnosis and treatment, family planning, genealogy research, forensic investigations, personalized medicine, and genetic counseling.

Benefits of the testing include accurate diagnosis and treatment, informed family planning, ancestry discovery, crime solving, and personalized healthcare.

However, limitations and considerations include accuracy and reliability concerns, interpretation complexity, genetic privacy issues, emotional implications, and cost and accessibility barriers.

Overall, testing provides valuable insights into an individual’s genetic makeup, helping individuals, families, and healthcare professionals make informed decisions.

Paternity fraud, or misattributed paternity, is a significant issue in Nigeria, with studies suggesting a prevalence rate ranging from 15.6% to 22.2%.

This phenomenon occurs when a man is incorrectly identified as the biological father of a child, often due to infidelity, lack of DNA testing, and cultural pressures.

The consequences of paternity fraud are far-reaching, leading to emotional trauma, psychological distress, and economic implications for all parties involved.

In Nigeria, the social stigma surrounding paternity disputes can be particularly damaging, leading to family dynamics and relationships being severely affected.
