Oseni Warns Nigerians Not to Expect Osun Poll Repeat in 2027

LAGOS, NIGERIA — ARISE Television presenter Rufai Oseni has issued a stark warning to Nigerians against assuming that the outcome of the Osun governorship election will be easily replicated during the 2027 general election, cautioning that the political forces that failed to influence the Osun contest could return with a stronger strategy and greater deployment of what he described as “federal might.

Speaking on Monday, the broadcaster reflected on his warnings before the Osun election, which he said were intended to prepare voters for possible dangers rather than frighten them. According to Oseni, Osun residents understood the risks surrounding the election and were consequently better prepared to defend their votes, a factor he credited for the successful outcome.

However, Oseni cautioned Nigerians against becoming complacent following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory, describing any assumption that the same result could be achieved nationally as “delusional.” “If you think because Osun people stood up, it will be easy in 2027, you are foolish. You are delusional,” he declared emphatically.

The broadcaster predicted that those who failed to achieve their objectives in Osun would return to the drawing board and attempt to perfect their strategy ahead of the general election. He further claimed that the level of federal influence witnessed in Osun could be deployed “three times over” during the 2027 polls, suggesting that the resources and machinery available at the national level far exceed what was brought to bear in the state election.

Oseni’s comments come in the wake of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of Adeleke of the Accord Party as the winner of Saturday’s Osun governorship election. The governor secured 534,066 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 492,425 votes. The outcome was hailed by many as a victory for the people’s will and a rejection of what some described as undue federal interference.

However, Oseni’s warning underscores the reality that state-level elections operate under different dynamics compared to national contests. The 2027 presidential election, he argued, would attract far greater attention, resources, and strategic deployment from all sides, making it a fundamentally different battlefield from the Osun governorship race.

The broadcaster’s remarks have sparked widespread debate on social media, with some agreeing that Nigerians must remain vigilant and not allow the Osun victory to breed overconfidence. Others have criticized Oseni’s choice of words, arguing that his characterization of voters as “foolish” or “delusional” was unnecessarily harsh and dismissive of the electorate’s capacity to defend their votes at the national level.

Political analysts have also weighed in, noting that Oseni’s warning reflects a broader concern about the resilience of Nigeria’s electoral process. The 2023 general elections were marred by allegations of irregularities, including vote-buying, violence, and logistical failures, and many fear that 2027 could see an escalation of these challenges if systemic reforms are not implemented.

As the nation looks ahead to 2027, Oseni’s message serves as a sobering reminder that the battle for Nigeria’s democratic soul is far from won. The Osun election demonstrated that ordinary citizens can resist manipulation when they are informed and mobilized, but replicating that success on a national scale will require sustained vigilance, institutional integrity, and a collective commitment to protecting the electoral process. For now, Oseni’s warning echoes across the political landscape: the fight for free and fair elections is only just beginning.
