Gwyneth Paltrow Recalls Brad Pitt Confronting Harvey Weinstein

Gwyneth Paltrow has recalled how her former boyfriend Brad Pitt confronted disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein after she told him about an uncomfortable encounter she had with the film mogul in the 1990s.

Paltrow opened up about the incident during a 2018 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, revealing that Weinstein made a pass at her while they were alone in a hotel room early in her acting career.

“We had one instance in a hotel room where he made a pass at me,” Paltrow told Howard Stern.

The actress said Weinstein had suggested that they have a massage, an encounter she described as unexpected and shocking. At the time, Paltrow was only 22 years old and had been cast in Emma, a role that would become an important part of her early career.

According to Paltrow, she immediately told her then-boyfriend, Brad Pitt, about what had happened.

“So, what happened was, I told him right away, and I was very shaken by the whole thing,” she recalled.

The situation was particularly frightening for Paltrow because she had already signed contracts to make two movies with Weinstein. She admitted that she was afraid that confronting the powerful producer could cost her those opportunities.

“I had two movies… I’d signed up to do two movies with him,” she told Stern. “I was afraid.”

Paltrow said Pitt subsequently confronted Weinstein at the Broadway opening of Hamlet in New York in 1995.

According to her recollection, Pitt made it clear to Weinstein that he should never make her uncomfortable again.

“He said, ‘If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you,’ or something like that,” Paltrow recalled.

She described Pitt’s confrontation as being “the equivalent of throwing him against the wall” energetically.

Paltrow also praised Pitt for using his position and influence to stand up for her at a time when she did not yet have the same level of power in Hollywood.

“It was so fantastic because what he did was, he leveraged his fame and power to protect me at a time when I didn’t have fame or power yet,” she said.

Paltrow said the confrontation appeared to have an effect because Weinstein was never inappropriate with her again.

“Harvey was never inappropriate with me again. Ever,” she said.

However, she described their subsequent professional relationship as complicated, saying that Weinstein’s power in the film industry remained a significant factor in their interactions.

The actress’s account became particularly significant after investigative reports in 2017 brought widespread attention to allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault against Weinstein. More than 50 women have since publicly accused him of sexual misconduct, while Weinstein has denied allegations of non-consensual sexual activity.

Paltrow had initially been reluctant to speak publicly about her experience because of the potential professional consequences. She later participated in the reporting by The New York Times that helped expose the allegations against Weinstein.

Pitt’s confrontation was subsequently corroborated by reporting that noted he confirmed the encounter to The New York Times. He later explained that he confronted Weinstein because of what Paltrow had told him.

For Paltrow, the incident was not simply about a former boyfriend confronting a powerful Hollywood figure. She said Pitt’s intervention demonstrated how someone with greater influence could use that position to protect another person who feared the consequences of speaking up.

Years later, her account of the encounter remains one of the stories surrounding the wider revelations about Weinstein’s conduct that helped reshape conversations about power, harassment and accountability in Hollywood.
