Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Wesley Fofana missing the decisive spot-kick in a dramatic shootout on Wednesday night.
The fourth-round encounter produced two first-half goals, several outstanding saves and a nerve-racking penalty competition that ultimately favoured Liverpool in front of their home supporters.
Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers’ penalty in the 40th minute, but Cody Gakpo responded from the spot three minutes later to restore parity for the hosts.
Neither side could find a winner during the remainder of normal time, despite several promising opportunities. Liverpool eventually prevailed in the shootout after goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha before Fofana sent his attempt over the crossbar.
The victory sent Liverpool into the last eight, where they will face Bournemouth at Anfield.
First Half: Liverpool and Chelsea Exchange Penalties
Liverpool started with attacking intent, but Chelsea initially defended well to prevent the hosts from creating clear-cut opportunities.
One of the early openings came when Lewis Koumas played a dangerous pass into the Liverpool penalty area for Gakpo. Chelsea defender Maxence Lacroix recovered quickly to disrupt the attack before the Dutch forward could produce a clean finish.
At the opposite end, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk intervened to prevent Danny Welbeck from making the most of a pass supplied by Wesley Fofana.
The contest remained relatively quiet during the opening half-hour, with both teams struggling to turn their possession into meaningful chances.
Liverpool’s James McConnell and Koumas received yellow cards in the 21st and 11th minutes respectively, as the intensity of the encounter increased.
Chelsea eventually broke the deadlock in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moises Caicedo inside the penalty area.
Caicedo had been released by a clever reverse pass from Malo Gusto and got ahead of the Liverpool midfielder before being fouled.
Rogers stepped forward to take responsibility for the resulting penalty and confidently placed his effort into the right corner, giving Chelsea a 1-0 advantage.
However, the visitors’ lead lasted only three minutes.
Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Fofana handled the ball inside the Chelsea penalty area during a corner-kick situation.
Gakpo stepped up in the 43rd minute and sent his low strike into the bottom-left corner, leaving goalkeeper Mike Penders with little chance of preventing the equaliser.
The goal brought Liverpool back into the contest and gave the home supporters renewed hope of seeing their team progress without needing a shootout.
Gakpo nearly added another before the interval, but Penders reacted well to keep out his powerful effort from outside the box.
Chelsea also suffered a setback before half-time when Lacroix appeared to sustain a hamstring injury and was replaced by Levi Colwill.
The teams went into the break level at 1-1 after a late burst of action had transformed an otherwise cautious first half.
Second Half: Goalkeepers Keep the Contest Level
Chelsea returned from the interval looking to regain the advantage, with Rogers testing Mamardashvili early in the second half.
The Liverpool goalkeeper produced a flying save to deny the Chelsea attacker, who had found space to shoot from a promising position.
Mamardashvili was called into action again when Pedro Neto attempted to trouble him with a curling effort, but the goalkeeper dealt with the danger.
Liverpool responded through Ronald Araujo, whose close-range header around the hour mark forced Penders into an important save.
Chelsea quickly attempted to turn defence into attack, but Liverpool defender Joe Gomez recovered to block Rogers’ subsequent effort inside the penalty area.
The encounter became more open as both managers introduced fresh attacking options.
Liverpool brought on Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola to increase their attacking threat, while Chelsea introduced Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha.
Barcola immediately made his presence felt, forcing Penders into an excellent save after his effort from approximately 18 yards took a deflection.
The Chelsea goalkeeper reacted quickly to divert the ball around the post, preserving his team’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
Chelsea also came close to taking the lead through Palestra, who finished a promising attacking move involving Neto and Rogers.
Mamardashvili produced one of the outstanding saves of the night, using one hand to divert Palestra’s effort away from the near bottom corner.
Liverpool subsequently threatened through Wirtz and Gakpo, but desperate defending from Colwill and Josh Acheampong prevented the hosts from finding a decisive second goal.
Despite the late pressure from both teams, neither could produce the breakthrough required to settle the tie in normal time.
With the score still 1-1 after 90 minutes, the fourth-round contest went to a penalty shootout.
Penalty Shootout: Liverpool Win 6-5 After Dramatic Finale
The shootout began with Alexis Mac Allister converting Liverpool’s opening penalty before Neto responded for Chelsea.
Alexander Isak then scored for Liverpool, while Rogers calmly converted his attempt to keep Chelsea level in the shootout.
Gakpo and Romeo Lavia also found the net, followed by Wirtz, who put Liverpool ahead again.
Chelsea’s Barco was unable to convert his attempt, with his effort striking the inside of the left post before bouncing away from goal.
Liverpool were presented with an opportunity to secure victory when Kostas Tsimikas stepped forward, but the defender blazed his penalty over the crossbar.
Jordan Henderson subsequently converted for Chelsea, making it 4-4 and sending the shootout into sudden death.
Barcola restored Liverpool’s advantage with a successful penalty, but Colwill responded confidently to bring the score to 5-5.
The shootout then produced another major twist when Penders saved Gravenberch’s attempt, giving Chelsea an opportunity to seize control.
However, Emegha, making his Chelsea debut after coming off the bench, could not take advantage. Mamardashvili dived to his right to save the forward’s penalty and keep Liverpool alive.
Gomez then stepped forward and delivered a powerful finish into the top corner, putting Liverpool 6-5 ahead in the shootout.
The pressure shifted entirely to Fofana, who needed to score to keep Chelsea in the competition.
Instead, his attempt sailed over the crossbar and into the Kop, confirming Liverpool’s victory and ending Chelsea’s Carabao Cup campaign.
What the Result Means for Liverpool and Chelsea
Liverpool’s victory secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they will host Bournemouth for a place in the semi-finals.
For Chelsea, the defeat represented another painful exit against Liverpool on penalties, adding to the clubs’ history of closely contested knockout encounters.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso saw his side compete for much of the contest, but the failure to convert their opportunities in normal time left the outcome in the hands of the penalty takers.
Penders produced several important saves during the match and stopped Gravenberch in the shootout, but Liverpool ultimately had the final word.
For the hosts, Gomez emerged as an unlikely hero by scoring the decisive penalty, while Mamardashvili’s save against Emegha proved crucial in determining the outcome.
Liverpool now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, while Chelsea must refocus on their Premier League campaign following their Carabao Cup elimination.
