Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed deep concern over the rising levels of poverty in Nigeria.

He described the current situation as the most severe crisis the country has faced since its amalgamation in 1914, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports.

El-Rufai made these remarks in Abuja during a lecture organized to mark the 60th birthday celebration of former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

In his address, El-Rufai reflected on his long-standing relationship with Amaechi, acknowledging that they have had disagreements in the past.

He specifically referenced the fallout that occurred after the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries.

Despite these differences, he noted that they have reunited in a shared commitment to help redirect the course of Nigeria, given the alarming challenges the nation is currently facing.

El-Rufai criticized the Nigerian political system for allowing individuals he described as underqualified to rise to positions of authority.

According to him, this situation has resulted in leadership that lacks vision, direction, and the capacity to drive meaningful development.

He argued that poverty in Nigeria is not necessarily a tool deliberately used by politicians, but rather a natural consequence of bad governance and prolonged neglect.

“Poverty weaponises itself if allowed to exist,” he stated, emphasizing how dangerous it can become when left unaddressed.

Drawing from his experiences in both the public and private sectors, El-Rufai highlighted the importance of capable leadership.

He stressed that Nigeria needs leaders who are not only qualified but also have the political will and integrity to implement sustainable reforms.

He pointed to Rivers State during Amaechi’s tenure as an example of what competent leadership can achieve.

According to him, his visits to the state revealed clear signs of infrastructural development and social progress.

He stated that when the right individuals are in charge, meaningful change is possible and can be sustained.

El-Rufai called on Nigerians to pay close attention to merit, competence, and leadership ability as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

He warned that continuing to elect individuals based on sentiments or patronage will only worsen the current situation.

In a striking comment, he cautioned against the rise of what he referred to as “urban bandits” in governance.

He urged citizens to reject mediocrity and demand accountability and excellence from those seeking public office.

El-Rufai concluded by reminding Nigerians that the future of the country rests on their choices and that leadership matters now more than ever.
