ADC embroiled in constitutional crisis as Mark, Aregbedola resume

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is embroiled in a constitutional crisis following the appointment of Senator David Mark as interim chairman, Rauf Aregbesola as national secretary, and Bolaji Abdullahi as national publicity secretary.

This takeover has sparked concerns about adherence to the party’s constitution.

Critics argue that the leadership transition did not follow the process stipulated in the ADC constitution.

The party’s national chairman, Ralph Nwosu, resigned to pave the way for Mark’s appointment, but this move is being questioned by some members.

There are concerns about whether Mark, Aregbesola, and Abdullahi meet the eligibility criteria for their respective positions, given their alleged lack of proper registration with the party.

The plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the appointment argue that interim positions do not exist in the ADC constitution, making the appointments unlawful.

Three aggrieved ADC members, Adeyemi Emmanuel, Ayodeji Victor Tolu, and Haruna Ismaila, have approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to nullify the appointment of Mark and others as interim leaders.

The plaintiffs are asking the court to declare the appointments unconstitutional, nullify any decisions or actions taken by the interim leaders, and bar the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the new leadership structure pending legal resolution

The lawsuit and constitutional breach concerns threaten the unity of the ADC, which has recently been adopted as a coalition platform by political allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The ADC’s crisis could impact its chances in the 2027 general elections, particularly if the party’s leadership structure is not stabilized.

There are indications of internal disagreement within the ADC, with some members questioning the legitimacy of the new leadership structure.

Many are calling for the party to adhere to its constitution and resolve the crisis amicably to avoid further divisions.
