AWKA, Anambra State — The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has issued a strong warning to residents against relying on unverified HIV statistics circulating on social media, urging the public to seek accurate information from official sources to avoid misinformation and unnecessary panic.
The agency expressed concern over the spread of false or misleading data regarding HIV prevalence in the state, which has surfaced on various social media platforms. Officials noted that inaccurate figures could undermine public trust in the healthcare system, discourage testing, and hinder efforts to combat the spread of the virus.
According to the agency, all official HIV-related data must be verified by the appropriate government health authorities and based on scientific evidence. The public was encouraged to obtain information from the Anambra State Ministry of Health, ANSACA, and other accredited health institutions to ensure accuracy.
The agency’s warning aligns with the broader national push for accurate health information dissemination, particularly regarding infectious diseases, and underscores the importance of combating the spread of health-related misinformation online.
The Anambra State Government has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that residents have access to correct health information and quality healthcare services. For now, the agency advises the public to disregard unverified HIV figures on social media and to rely solely on official government health channels for accurate data.
The spread of unverified health information has become a growing concern in Nigeria, with social media platforms often serving as conduits for misinformation. Health experts have warned that false data can lead to stigma, discrimination, and poor health-seeking behaviour, particularly in the context of HIV/AIDS, where accurate information is critical for prevention and treatment.
Anambra State has made significant progress in its HIV response, with increased testing, treatment, and awareness campaigns over the years. However, the agency cautioned that misinformation could reverse these gains by creating confusion and fear among the public. The agency reiterated that HIV is a manageable condition and that accurate information is key to reducing stigma and encouraging people to know their status.
The agency further called on community leaders, religious institutions, and civil society organisations to play an active role in countering misinformation by sharing verified health information and encouraging residents to consult healthcare professionals for guidance. The government also urged residents to verify any health-related information they encounter online before sharing it with others.
The Anambra State Ministry of Health has assured the public that it remains committed to providing transparent and accurate information on HIV and other health issues. The ministry also encouraged residents to visit public health facilities for testing and counselling services, which are available free of charge.
In addition, the agency highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, healthcare providers, and the media in ensuring that accurate health information reaches the public. The agency commended journalists and media organisations for their role in disseminating verified health information and urged them to continue to prioritise accuracy and fact-checking in their reporting.
As the fight against HIV/AIDS continues, the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency has made its position clear: misinformation is a public health threat that must be addressed with the same urgency as the disease itself. For now, residents are advised to stay informed, stay safe, and always verify health information before acting on it.
