OGUN STATE, NIGERIA — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has downplayed the political significance of Iyabo Obasanjo’s reported exit from the party, insisting that it will not affect the party’s structure or electoral strength ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The party leader also declared strong support for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” describing him as a leading contender capable of consolidating APC’s influence in the state.
Speaking on the political developments, the chieftain maintained that internal movements and defections are normal features of Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as parties begin early positioning ahead of major elections.
He argued that the APC in Ogun State remains stable, united, and strategically positioned, adding that recent political realignments should not be interpreted as a threat to the party’s dominance in the state.
According to him, Senator Adeola’s growing political profile and legislative experience place him in a strong position to contest and possibly secure the governorship ticket in 2027, should the party decide in his favour.
He further noted that Adeola’s representation in the National Assembly has strengthened his visibility and influence across Ogun State, particularly through constituency projects and political engagement at grassroots level.
The chieftain expressed confidence that the APC remains the party to beat in Ogun State, citing its existing political structures, national influence, and governance track record as key advantages ahead of the next general election cycle.
Political observers say early endorsements and alignments are becoming more pronounced as parties begin informal preparations for 2027, with key stakeholders already positioning preferred candidates across various states.
However, analysts also caution that internal party dynamics, zoning considerations, and emerging opposition alliances could still shape the final outcome of governorship contests in the state.
Despite ongoing political discussions, APC leaders insist the party remains focused on unity and consolidation, stressing that internal disagreements and exits will not derail its long-term electoral strategy.
As the 2027 political season gradually takes shape, attention continues to shift toward how major parties will manage internal ambitions while maintaining cohesion ahead of critical state-level contests.
