Olanrewaju George, a member of the House of Representatives from the Labour Party (LP), representing Remo Federal Constituency in Ogun State, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The businessman and philanthropist-turned-politician made the announcement, explaining that the APC provides the ideal platform to foster development, Diaspora digital media (DDM) reported.

George’s defection comes amid growing instability within the LP, with the party facing internal divisions and leadership crises that have led to a series of defections by some of its members.

This recent wave of exits has significantly weakened the LP’s position in various states, particularly within the National Assembly, where it once boasted a growing influence.

George’s move follows a trend in which some LP House of Representatives members had defected to the APC in recent weeks, seeking to align themselves with a more stable and organized political structure.

The current political atmosphere in the LP has created a difficult environment for many lawmakers, as disagreements over leadership, direction, and party policies continue to brew, making it increasingly challenging for members to stay aligned with the party.

In a letter addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4, Sagamu Local Government, on Monday, George officially declared his defection.

He was accompanied by his supporters and key allies who shared his vision for the country’s development under the APC.

In his letter, George expressed full confidence in the APC’s vision for national progress, emphasizing that he believes the party’s agenda aligns better with his own goals for addressing the issues facing his constituency.

George assured the APC leaders of his commitment to strengthening the party’s structure, enhancing its electoral success, and contributing to its long-term goals.

“This decision marks a new chapter in our political journey.

We are committed to working with the APC to ensure success and good governance,” George stated.

His decision underscores his belief that the APC provides a more conducive environment for political growth, especially in light of the current crises facing the LP.

The Aare Tayese of Ikenne also identified several key factors that led to his decision to leave the LP and join the APC, including the lack of youth inclusion, insufficient infrastructure development, and ineffective representation.

He lamented the ongoing challenges faced by the youth, particularly the lack of essential services and opportunities.

George emphasized that the APC is actively addressing these gaps, which had long been neglected by his previous party.

George, who contested the Remo Federal Constituency seat in the 2023 House of Representatives election, has also expressed his determination to contribute meaningfully to the APC’s development and unity.

He stated that he will work hard to promote the values of the party and ensure that the LP’s agenda for change is fulfilled within the context of the APC’s governance.

He believes that the APC’s leadership, especially under President Bola Tinubu, is committed to building a more unified and prosperous Nigeria.

This defection is another blow to the Labour Party, whose internal strife has weakened its influence across the country.

As George and other members move to the APC, the political landscape in Ogun State and across the country may see shifts as the crisis within the LP continues to unfold.
