Former President Muhammadu Buhari has opened up about the state of his health and the complexities of governing Nigeria, following his exit from office in May 2023.

Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting held at the Katsina Government House

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that Buhari shared insights into the difficulties of leadership in Nigeria and his health improvements since stepping down.

Buhari acknowledged the enormous challenges that come with governing a nation as complex as Nigeria, explaining that many outside the corridors of power often fail to grasp the depth of these difficulties.

He emphasized that the issues faced by the country during his tenure were not easily understood by those who were not in positions of authority.

According to Buhari, leading Nigeria required navigating various intricacies and burdens that most people could not fully appreciate.

Reflecting on his time in office, Buhari highlighted the ongoing struggles and the immense responsibility that political leadership entails.

He pointed out that despite efforts to tackle Nigeria’s challenges, the country’s problems were deep-rooted and required continuous attention.

In a moment of candidness, Buhari shared that his tenure was shaped by a series of tough decisions aimed at addressing these issues, even as he and his administration faced criticism for certain policies and actions.

Despite the strenuous nature of his presidency, Buhari noted that his health has notably improved after leaving office.

“My health has improved since leaving office. People who visited me told me I look better than before,” he revealed, offering a rare glimpse into his life after leaving the presidential seat.

His improved health seems to reflect the relief that comes with stepping away from the pressures of leadership, which had long been a burden on him.

As he spoke to the gathering of political figures in Katsina, Buhari also shared advice on governance.

He urged current and future political leaders to remain transparent in their management of public funds, emphasizing that such accountability was critical for effective leadership.

According to Buhari, it is vital for leaders to remember that they are not only accountable to the people but also to Allah, stressing the importance of moral responsibility and integrity in governance.

In his address, Buhari made it clear that the leadership of Nigeria requires a sense of deep responsibility, and this responsibility cannot be taken lightly.

He called for greater accountability in the management of public resources and for leaders to always be mindful of their duty to both the people and to God.

This message of transparency and ethical leadership resonated with the audience, many of whom were key figures from Katsina State, including former Governors Aminu Bello Masari and Ibrahim Shehu Shema, as well as current Governor Dikko Umar Radda and several members of the National Assembly.

The APC stakeholders’ meeting, which was aimed at strategizing for the upcoming February 15 local government elections in Katsina State, provided Buhari with a platform to share his thoughts on the state of the nation and the road ahead for Nigerian politics.

Prominent members of the APC from various levels of government were in attendance, discussing how best to engage with voters and ensure a successful election.

As Buhari continues to adjust to life after the presidency, his insights remain relevant to those currently in positions of power in Nigeria.
