Doctors Highlight the Importance of Maintaining Healthy Kidney Function Through Proper Hydration

Health experts are encouraging Nigerians to stay adequately hydrated, emphasizing that drinking enough water each day plays an important role in supporting healthy kidney function and overall well-being.

According to medical professionals, the kidneys are two vital organs responsible for filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood, regulating electrolyte balance, controlling blood pressure, and producing hormones that support red blood cell production and bone health. Keeping the kidneys healthy is essential for maintaining the body’s normal functions.

Doctors explain that proper hydration helps the kidneys remove waste efficiently through urine. When the body does not receive enough fluids, the kidneys have to work harder, and the risk of dehydration, kidney stones, and other kidney-related problems may increase.

Health experts note that an individual’s daily water needs vary depending on factors such as age, body size, physical activity, climate, and overall health. People who work outdoors, exercise regularly, or spend time in hot environments may require additional fluids to replace those lost through sweating.

Medical professionals advise the public to drink water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until they become extremely thirsty. Urine that is pale yellow or light straw in colour generally indicates good hydration, while consistently dark urine may suggest the need for increased fluid intake, although certain medications and foods can also affect urine colour.

Doctors warn that chronic dehydration may contribute to the development of kidney stones and urinary tract infections and may worsen kidney function in individuals who already have kidney disease. They encourage anyone experiencing persistent pain during urination, blood in the urine, swelling of the legs, reduced urination, or ongoing lower back pain to seek prompt medical evaluation.

Experts recommend supporting kidney health through additional healthy lifestyle habits, including eating a balanced diet, reducing excessive salt intake, maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco products, and limiting excessive alcohol consumption.

Health professionals also caution against the unnecessary or prolonged use of certain pain-relieving medications without medical supervision, as some medicines may affect kidney function when used excessively or over long periods.

Doctors encourage people living with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease to attend regular medical check-ups and undergo routine kidney function assessments when recommended. Early detection of kidney problems can help prevent permanent damage and improve treatment outcomes.

Medical experts conclude that maintaining healthy kidneys begins with simple daily habits. They encourage Nigerians to drink adequate amounts of water, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and seek timely medical advice whenever symptoms of kidney problems develop, noting that prevention and early detection remain the best strategies for protecting kidney health.
