Duoye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, has been appointed as the new chairman of the South-South Governors Forum

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that Diri, who is currently serving his second term as governor, was elected during a meeting of the forum in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The election took place on January 28, 2025, and was part of ongoing discussions regarding regional development and cooperation among the South-South states.

The announcement came through a communique issued after the meeting, where the South-South Governors Forum outlined its commitment to addressing pressing regional issues and advancing unity and development.

According to the communique, the forum’s gathering focused on crafting strategies that would benefit the South-South region as a whole.

The governors reaffirmed their dedication to fostering collaborative governance and ensuring the welfare of their people while striving for sustainable development.

The South-South Governors Forum includes the six states in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone: Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.

The meeting held in Yenagoa was attended by the governors of Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, as the newly elected chairman, presided over the proceedings.

The communique highlighted the forum’s collective commitment to the growth and prosperity of the South-South region.

It expressed a unified stance on the importance of collaboration among the governors and the need for joint efforts to tackle regional challenges.

The governors collectively emphasized their desire to create policies and initiatives that would drive sustainable development across the South-South.

Governor Diri, now at the helm of the South-South Governors Forum, assured the attendees of his dedication to strengthening the unity of the region.

He stressed that the forum would work tirelessly to align the South-South states toward common goals and shared progress.

Diri’s leadership was welcomed by his colleagues, who expressed confidence that his experience as a two-term governor would bring valuable insight and direction to the forum’s future endeavors.

One notable absence from the meeting was Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, who did not attend the gathering.

His absence was conspicuous, and the governor did not send a representative in the form of his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, to participate in the crucial meeting.

This absence raised some questions about the level of participation from Edo State in the forum’s activities.

Despite this, the rest of the governors present affirmed their determination to pursue policies that would benefit the South-South states collectively, without allowing individual absences to hinder the forum’s progress.

The South-South region of Nigeria has faced a number of challenges, including infrastructural deficits, security concerns, and economic difficulties.

However, through the South-South Governors Forum, the leaders in the region have worked to address these challenges with a cooperative approach.

The governors have repeatedly emphasized the importance of pooling resources and ideas to achieve the best outcomes for their people.

As the newly elected chairman of the South-South Governors Forum, Duoye Diri will play a key role in guiding discussions and initiatives that impact the region.

His leadership will be pivotal in ensuring that the South-South states work together to overcome challenges and take advantage of opportunities for growth.

The forum’s commitment to unity and development remains strong, and with Diri at the helm, the South-South region looks forward to a future of greater collaboration and progress.
