Hon. IG Amaechi Okoro, the Delta State Media and Publicity Secretary of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), has strongly dismissed allegations that Peter Obi is working to destabilize the Labour Party.

Speaking to Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, he described the claims as baseless, politically motivated, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish Obi’s reputation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, 27th January 2025, Hon. Okoro countered the accusations made by the Alliance for All Labour Party Professionals and Stakeholders (AALPS), insisting that Obi remains a dedicated leader committed to the party’s growth and national development.

He argued that the former Anambra State governor has consistently upheld party values and worked tirelessly to build a formidable opposition capable of challenging the ruling party in future elections.

“There is no truth in the claim that Peter Obi is destroying the Labour Party,” Hon. Okoro stated.

“Rather, he has been a pillar of support for the party, attracting national and international recognition and ensuring that millions of Nigerians now see the Labour Party as a viable alternative to traditional political structures.”

He dismissed the suggestion that Obi is funding crises or planning to leave the party, describing it as pure propaganda designed to mislead Nigerians and weaken the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Hon. Okoro further debunked the assertion that Obi failed to support the Labour Party financially.

He emphasized that the 2023 presidential campaign was driven by a grassroots movement of millions of Nigerians who believed in Obi’s vision and voluntarily contributed their resources to support his candidacy.

According to him, the rapid growth and increased membership of the Labour Party are largely due to Obi’s influence, his credibility, and the hope he has given Nigerians seeking an alternative to the status quo.

“Peter Obi did not just contest on the Labour Party platform; he gave the party national visibility,” Hon. Okoro added.

“Before his emergence, the Labour Party was barely recognized at the federal level. Today, it is a formidable force, thanks to his leadership and the trust that millions of Nigerians have placed in him.”

“If anything, Obi deserves commendation, not false accusations aimed at distracting him from his commitment to a better Nigeria.”

Hon. Okoro also dismissed claims that Obi was responsible for the legal battles within the party.

He insisted that Obi’s respect for due process and the judiciary shows his commitment to democratic principles, the rule of law, and transparency.

He maintained that Obi is focused on consolidating the Labour Party’s gains rather than weakening its structure, as alleged by his detractors.

“Legal processes exist for a reason,” Hon. Okoro said.

“If anyone feels aggrieved within a political party, the courts are the right place to seek redress. Obi has never acted outside the law, and it is unfair to label him a destabilizing force simply because he insists on justice and accountability.”

He accused those spreading false allegations of trying to create unnecessary divisions within the party instead of focusing on building a stronger political movement.

He urged AALPS and other party stakeholders to prioritize unity over divisive narratives and warned that continuous internal attacks could weaken the party’s chances in 2027.

Hon. Okoro called for a collective effort in strengthening the Labour Party, noting that opposition parties are already strategizing for the next general elections, and the Labour Party must remain focused on its mission.

“The Labour Party has an opportunity to build on the gains of the 2023 elections,” he said.

“Instead of engaging in distractions, all stakeholders should come together and work towards a common goal—ensuring that the party remains a credible alternative in 2027.”

He also urged party members and supporters to remain steadfast and not be swayed by propaganda aimed at discrediting Obi’s contributions to the party.

Hon. Okoro reiterated that Obi remains committed to the Labour Party and has no intention of leaving, contrary to the claims being spread by his opponents.

“Obi has shown great dedication to the Labour Party and its principles,” he emphasized.

“He has been a voice for good governance, transparency, and accountability, and that is why he continues to enjoy the support of millions of Nigerians.”

He advised Obi’s detractors to focus on nation-building rather than peddling falsehoods that could weaken the party.

Hon. Okoro concluded by reaffirming Obi’s commitment to the Labour Party and its mission of offering Nigerians a credible alternative to the failed governance structures of the past.

He urged supporters to ignore false allegations and focus on the bigger goal of national transformation, which remains the priority for Obi and his political movement.
