ADO-EKITI, EKITI STATE — Tension rose in parts of Ekiti State as residents staged a protest over the continued captivity of 16 worshippers reportedly abducted by armed men, despite claims that a ransom of ₦10.5 million had already been paid for their release.

The demonstrators, who gathered in affected communities, expressed frustration over what they described as worsening insecurity and the apparent failure of efforts to secure the freedom of the victims. Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans demanding urgent government intervention to rescue the abducted worshippers.

According to local accounts shared by community members, the victims were seized by gunmen during a recent attack, prompting panic and immediate calls for help from families and religious leaders. Residents allege that despite fulfilling ransom demands, the abductors have continued to hold the victims, raising fears over their safety and wellbeing.

The protest highlighted growing anger among citizens over repeated kidnapping incidents in the state and across parts of the country. Many residents accused authorities of not doing enough to prevent abductions or respond swiftly when such incidents occur.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, have reportedly intensified efforts to track the armed group responsible for the abduction. However, as of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation regarding the ransom payment or the exact status of the victims.

Community leaders and religious figures joined calls for urgent action, urging security operatives to prioritize the safe rescue of the 16 worshippers. They warned that continued delays could heighten fear and further destabilize already vulnerable rural communities.

Ekiti State has in recent years witnessed recurring cases of kidnapping for ransom, particularly along remote roads and farming communities. These incidents have contributed to increased security concerns and repeated calls for stronger protection measures.

Security analysts note that ransom payments do not always guarantee the release of victims, as criminal groups may exploit such situations for additional leverage. They emphasize the need for coordinated intelligence-led operations to dismantle kidnapping networks and prevent future attacks.
