WARSAW, Poland — The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a new cooperation agreement with the Polish government aimed at strengthening internal security, border management, and critical infrastructure protection, as both countries seek to deepen bilateral ties and enhance institutional collaboration.

The agreement was announced following talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and Poland’s Interior Minister, Marcin Kierwiński, in Warsaw. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in key areas of security governance and public safety.

Under the arrangement, Nigeria and Poland will establish a Technical Working Group tasked with developing a comprehensive framework covering border security, civil defence operations, fire and rescue services, and the protection of critical national infrastructure. Officials from both countries are expected to work closely on designing mechanisms that will improve operational efficiency, knowledge sharing, and institutional capacity.

According to details of the agreement, the framework will be guided by international human rights standards and the rule of law, ensuring that security measures are implemented within recognised legal and democratic principles. Correctional reforms will also form part of the broader cooperation agenda as both nations explore ways to strengthen security institutions and improve governance structures.

The partnership comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernise its internal security architecture and enhance the capacity of agencies responsible for border control, emergency response, and public safety. Government officials believe international collaboration will provide opportunities for technology transfer, professional training, and the adoption of global best practices.

Speaking on the significance of the agreement, officials noted that effective border management has become increasingly important in addressing transnational crimes, irregular migration, trafficking, and other security challenges. They added that cooperation with experienced international partners would support Nigeria’s efforts to build more resilient institutions capable of responding to evolving threats.

The latest development follows a meeting held three weeks earlier in Abuja between Nigeria’s Interior Minister and Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski. During that engagement, both sides reportedly initiated discussions on strengthening diplomatic, economic, and institutional cooperation, laying the groundwork for the agreement signed in Warsaw.

Analysts view the partnership as part of Nigeria’s broader strategy of leveraging international partnerships to improve domestic security and governance outcomes. They note that growing cooperation with European countries could help strengthen technical expertise and institutional capacity in areas critical to national development.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the collaboration would deliver tangible benefits for both countries, particularly in enhancing security operations, promoting public safety, and strengthening institutional effectiveness. Officials also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that all aspects of the partnership are implemented transparently and in accordance with international standards.

The agreement marks another step in Nigeria’s efforts to build strategic international alliances aimed at addressing security challenges while promoting sustainable governance and national stability.
