The Federal Government is set to bring six suspected coup plotters before the court today, Wednesday, April 22, 2026, as their trial begins in Abuja.

The defendants are expected to appear before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court by noon, according to confirmation from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The case stems from a charge filed on Monday, April 20, which alleges that a group of military officers and civilians were involved in a plot against President Bola Tinubu.

Among those named is retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, along with retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.

The government also listed former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, as being connected to the case, although he is currently said to be at large.

According to the charge sheet (FHC/ABJ/CR/206/2026), the defendants are accused of offences including treason, terrorism, failure to report a planned attack, and money laundering linked to alleged terrorism financing.

Prosecutors claim the group conspired in 2025 to “levy war against the state” with the aim of overthrowing the President an offence punishable under Nigeria’s Criminal Code.

They are also accused of having prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act involving another officer but failing to report it to security authorities.

In addition, the government alleges they did not take steps to stop the plot or alert relevant agencies when they became aware of it.

The case is expected to open formal proceedings as the accused make their first appearance in court today.
