Top diplomats from the world’s leading economies are gathering in France for a crucial meeting aimed at easing tensions within the alliance over the ongoing Iran conflict.
Foreign ministers from the G7 countries the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan are meeting just outside Paris for two days of high-level talks.
The meeting comes at a tense moment, as disagreements grow between the United States and its allies over the war involving Iran.
While all G7 nations are close partners of Washington, none has openly backed the U.S. military action against Iran a situation that has reportedly frustrated former U.S. President Donald Trump.
European countries are instead pushing for calm, urging efforts to reduce tensions rather than escalate the conflict further.
The talks are happening against the backdrop of strong warnings from Washington.
The White House has said the U.S. is ready to take tougher action if Iran refuses to agree to a deal.
Meanwhile, the conflict is spreading. Lebanon has been drawn in after Hezbollah a group backed by Iran launched rockets into Israel, raising fears of a wider regional war.
France, which is hosting the meeting, has also cautioned Israel against expanding military operations into southern Lebanon.
Beyond Iran, the G7 meeting will address other major global crises, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the situation in Gaza.
France has also invited countries like Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Ukraine to join parts of the discussions, in an effort to widen international cooperation.
Despite the shared platform, cracks within the G7 are becoming more visible.
Some European leaders have criticised U.S. actions, warning that the conflict is already affecting global economies. Others are concerned that the Iran war is distracting attention from other urgent issues, especially in Gaza.
Even with rising tensions, diplomatic efforts are ongoing. Reports suggest talks with Iran are continuing, although Tehran has reportedly rejected a U.S.-backed peace proposal.
For now, the G7 meeting is seen as a key opportunity to bring allies closer togetherG and possibly prevent the conflict from escalating further.
