Gbandi Calls for Democratic Reforms, Diaspora Inclusion in Nigeria’s Nation-Building

LAGOS, Nigeria — Public affairs commentator and policy advocate, Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, has called for sweeping democratic, electoral, security, and constitutional reforms, arguing that Nigeria’s nation-building process requires sustained “reconstruction” anchored on accountability, citizen participation, and institutional renewal.

In a Democracy Day reflection, Gbandi described nation-building as a “marathon” rather than a short-term effort, warning that widespread public frustration and cynicism should be seen as a catalyst for reform rather than a sign of hopelessness. He said Nigerians across different regions and in the diaspora are increasingly united by a demand for better governance and measurable political performance.

He argued that the country must move beyond what he described as outdated political myths, including godfatherism, vote-buying, and ethnic or religious manipulation. According to him, democratic progress depends on a shift toward issue-based politics where candidates are required to defend their records, present clear policy proposals, and demonstrate competence in governance areas such as security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic management.

Gbandi also emphasized the need for stronger engagement from Nigerians in the diaspora, noting that while remittances and financial contributions remain significant, they are no longer sufficient. He called for greater inclusion of diaspora professionals in policymaking, innovation, investment, civic education, and governance reforms, arguing that Nigeria must better harness its global intellectual and professional capital.

On institutional reform, he outlined three priority areas: electoral, security, and constitutional restructuring. He advocated for reforms that would guarantee transparent elections and ensure that every vote is properly counted and protected. He also called for urgent improvements in national security architecture to address kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, and communal violence, stressing that citizens must be able to live and work in safety.

Gbandi further argued for constitutional reforms aimed at creating a more effective federal structure, with clearer responsibilities for subnational governments and improved governance efficiency. He maintained that Nigeria’s long-term stability and development depend on addressing structural weaknesses that continue to limit accountability and national cohesion.

He concluded that Nigeria’s democratic journey requires patience, resilience, and active citizen participation, urging leaders and citizens alike to commit to rebuilding institutions capable of delivering justice, opportunity, and sustainable development.
