OWERRI, NIGERIA — Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has reportedly approved a financial support package of ₦1 million each for Imo indigenes who were recently evacuated from South Africa following renewed xenophobic tensions and attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The gesture, according to reports, was made when the returnees arrived in Nigeria as part of a coordinated evacuation exercise by the Federal Government, which has been working with diplomatic and aviation authorities to bring stranded Nigerians back home safely amid rising insecurity in parts of South Africa.
The returnees, comprising men, women, and youths, were received upon arrival in Nigeria before being transported to their respective states of origin, where further reintegration processes are expected to take place.
Governor Uzodimma’s reported intervention is said to be aimed at easing the immediate economic hardship faced by the returnees, many of whom allegedly lost businesses, properties, and livelihoods during the wave of violence and unrest in South Africa.
State officials were quoted as saying that the ₦1 million support per individual is intended to help the returnees resettle, rebuild their lives, and reintegrate into society after their abrupt displacement.
The development has drawn attention to the broader challenges facing Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly in countries where xenophobic tensions and anti-immigrant sentiments have periodically escalated into violence and economic displacement.
