Haaland’s Double Sends Norway into Historic World Cup Quarter-finals as Brazil’s Sixth-Star Dream Ends

Brazil’s hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals suffered a major setback in the opening half after they failed to capitalize on their best opportunity of the match. The five-time world champions were awarded a penalty following a determined run by Matheus Cunha into the Norwegian penalty area. As Cunha attempted to take the ball past his marker, he was brought down, leaving the referee with little hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Bruno Guimaraes accepted the responsibility, but his low penalty lacked both power and placement, allowing Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland to dive to his right and make a comfortable save. The stop proved to be the game’s first defining moment, lifting Norway’s confidence while visibly frustrating the Brazilian players.

Norway had already shown signs of their attacking intent earlier when Patrick Berg found the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out after a VAR-assisted offside decision during the build-up. Although the effort did not count, it served as an early warning that the Scandinavian side would not be intimidated by their illustrious opponents.

Brazil responded positively, with Vinicius Junior producing several dangerous attacks down the left flank. His blistering pace repeatedly stretched the Norwegian defence, and one powerful effort forced Nyland into another important save before halftime. Alisson Becker also had to be alert at the opposite end, denying Martin Odegaard with a smart stop after the Arsenal captain was played through inside the penalty area.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the second half after sustained Norwegian pressure. In the 72nd minute, Andreas Schjelderup delivered an inviting cross from the left wing after creating space with an excellent first touch. Erling Haaland rose above Gabriel Magalhaes inside the six-yard box and powered a header beyond Alisson to give Norway a deserved 1–0 advantage. It was Haaland’s sixth goal of the tournament, further strengthening his position among the leading scorers at the World Cup.

Brazil immediately increased the tempo in search of an equaliser. Carlo Ancelotti introduced Neymar and teenage striker Endrick in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the attack. Endrick almost made an instant impact after receiving a perfectly weighted through ball from Vinicius Junior, but the young forward’s heavy first touch took him too wide, and he dragged his shot past the far post from close range.

As Brazil committed more players forward, Norway exploited the spaces left behind. Deep into the 90th minute, Haaland struck again to effectively end the contest. Collecting the ball just outside the penalty area, the Manchester City striker turned away from his marker before driving a precise low shot into the bottom corner beyond the reach of Alisson. The goal doubled Norway’s advantage and sent the Scandinavian supporters into wild celebrations.

Brazil were awarded a second penalty during stoppage time after Casemiro was fouled inside the area while attempting to reach a loose ball. This time Neymar stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending Nyland the wrong way to reduce the deficit to 2–1. Although the goal offered Brazil a glimmer of hope, there was little time remaining, and Norway managed the closing moments professionally before the referee blew the final whistle.

Goalscorers:

72nd minute: Erling Haaland (Norway) – Powerful header from Andreas Schjelderup’s cross.

90th minute: Erling Haaland (Norway) – Low right-footed finish from outside the penalty area.

90+ minutes: Neymar (Brazil) – Penalty after Casemiro was fouled inside the box.

The result secured a famous 2–1 victory for Norway and booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, while Brazil’s pursuit of a record-extending sixth world title came to a disappointing end.
