Insecurity: Nigerian Speaker impeached over kidnapping, banditry
The Zamfara State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, over rising insecurity in the state.
Bashar Gummi has, meanwhile, been appointed as the Acting Speaker.
The impeachment was sequel to a motion moved by member representing Maru Constituency, Nasiru Abdullahi.
It was endorsed by 18 out of 24 members.
The signatories had agreed to impeach the speaker during an emergency meeting held on Friday.
They said the sacked speaker had ignored calls to act on the security challenge facing the state.
One of the lawmakers, Shamsudeen Basko, representing Talata Mafara Constituency, told the acting speaker that the issue of insecurity was one of the key issues to be given top priority which led to the suspension of the former speaker.
Basko was quoted as saying, “I have two issues, but an observation was made on one, which is that of insecurity which has been disturbing our people. Our people are being killed and abducted on a daily basis.
“What are we doing in the assembly? We need to stand up and do something to defend our people. This is because the armed bandits are invading local government headquarters unchallenged. Let us call on the government to act now to protect our people.”
Zamfara State, in recent years, has been a hotbed for kidnapping and banditry.
Located in Nigeria’s northern region, the state has large reserves of solid minerals which are mostly controlled by militia groups.
