A strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast on Monday afternoon, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
According to report by Reuters, quake hit in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 10 kilometres, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning.
Officials say waves as high as three metres could reach parts of Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido.
On Japan’s seismic intensity scale, the tremor registered an “upper 5” a level powerful enough to make it hard for people to stay on their feet.
In situations like this, weaker structures, especially unreinforced concrete walls, can collapse.
Emergency services are on alert as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
