Lagos Schools Introduce Interactive Board Game Approach To Boost Yoruba Language Learning

The Lagos State Government has introduced a new educational strategy aimed at improving Yoruba language learning in public schools through the use of interactive board games, in a move designed to make classroom instruction more engaging, practical and student friendly.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to preserve indigenous languages while also modernising teaching methods within the state’s education system. Authorities say the approach is expected to strengthen students’ interest in Yoruba while improving comprehension and retention levels across primary and secondary schools.

Education officials in Lagos explained that the new model will integrate structured board game activities into Yoruba language lessons. The system is designed to move beyond traditional rote memorisation by encouraging active participation, teamwork and real time problem solving among students.

The programme is particularly targeted at addressing declining interest in indigenous languages among younger learners, especially in urban communities where English has become the dominant language of communication both inside and outside the classroom.
