Lisandro Martinez Rejects Anti Argentina Criticism After 2026 World Cup Final

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has strongly defended Argentina following the team’s controversial 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, insisting there is “no real reason” for the criticism directed at the reigning South American champions.

The centre back responded after Argentina faced widespread scrutiny during and after the tournament, which ended with a heartbreaking 1-0 extra time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. While Argentina reached the championship match through a series of determined performances, their style of play and several on field incidents sparked intense debate among fans, pundits and former players.

Martinez believes much of the criticism has been unfair and motivated by bias rather than facts. Speaking to French outlet Foot Mercato, the defender dismissed claims that Argentina deserved the negative attention.

“An anti Argentina campaign? I’m a little annoyed because they have no real reason to hate us,” Martinez said.

“They say we are arrogant, but that says more about them than about us. We have always been very respectful towards every opponent we have faced.”

Argentina’s World Cup journey was filled with memorable victories but also moments of controversy. The Albiceleste defeated England in the semi-finals to reach the final against Spain, but criticism mounted over their physical approach in several knockout matches and heated confrontations involving players and coaching staff.

The final itself proved to be an emotional affair. Spain secured their second World Cup title thanks to Ferran Torres’ extra time winner in a tightly contested match that also saw midfielder Enzo Fernandez sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Tempers flared after the final whistle, leading to further criticism of Argentina’s conduct.

One of the biggest talking points after the tournament involved FIFA’s investigation into the display of a Falklands or Malvinas themed banner during Argentina’s celebrations after their semi-final victory. The incident attracted significant international attention and added to the scrutiny surrounding the team.

Martinez had earlier posted a cryptic message on social media following the final defeat, writing that “the fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre.” The remark generated mixed reactions, with supporters praising his passion while critics argued it further fuelled the perception of arrogance surrounding the squad.

Despite the backlash, Martinez insists Argentina never disrespected their opponents and believes the team’s image has been unfairly distorted. According to the defender, the players remained committed to representing their country with pride throughout the competition.

The debate surrounding Argentina has intensified in recent days after FIFA president Gianni Infantino also criticised what he described as excessive negativity directed at the World Cup, accusing some observers of spreading “hate and false rumours” instead of recognising the tournament’s successes.

Although Argentina narrowly missed out on retaining football’s biggest prize, their run to the final reinforced their status among the world’s elite national teams. With stars such as Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martinez, Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez and Lisandro Martinez still forming the backbone of the squad, expectations remain high that Argentina will continue competing for major honours in the years ahead.

For Martinez, however, the priority is ensuring the team’s achievements are judged fairly rather than being overshadowed by controversy. He maintains that Argentina earned its place in the World Cup final through determination, quality and respect for every opponent faced along the way.
