Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian-French author, illustrator, and filmmaker best known for her acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis, has reportedly died at the age of 56.

According to a family statement cited by AFP, her passing comes a little over a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa, an event described by those close to her as having a profound emotional impact.

Following Ripa’s death in April 2025, Satrapi was said to have gone through a deeply difficult period of grief while continuing to work on projects that honoured his memory. She later established the Mattias and Marjane Ripa-Satrapi Cinema Foundation to support international students pursuing filmmaking studies in Paris.

In a heartfelt message shared after her husband’s passing, she wrote: “For I have lost the love of my life.”

Born in Rasht, Iran, in 1969, Satrapi grew up in Tehran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Her early experiences under strict social and political conditions later became the foundation of her most celebrated work, Persepolis.

First published in French in 2000, Persepolis is a graphic memoir that chronicles her childhood in Iran and her teenage years in Europe after she was sent to Vienna at the age of 14. The book was later translated into more than 30 languages and received international critical acclaim.

With its distinctive black-and-white artwork, Persepolis became widely regarded as a groundbreaking work that redefined the potential of graphic novels as serious literature. It offered a deeply personal perspective on identity, exile, and life in post-revolution Iran.

Beyond literature, Satrapi was also a respected filmmaker and cultural advocate. She worked to support young filmmakers and promoted artistic and cultural exchange across borders.

Her legacy continues to influence both literary and film communities around the world.
