Medical experts have urged Nigerians not to ignore persistent fatigue, sudden weight changes, or unusual sensitivity to temperature, warning that such symptoms could be signs of an underlying thyroid disorder.
The thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating several body functions, including metabolism, energy production, heart rate, growth, and body temperature. When the gland fails to function properly, it can trigger a wide range of health problems that often go unnoticed in their early stages.
Speaking on the condition, Dr Yahaya Mohammed, a physician, explained that thyroid disorders are among the most common endocrine conditions and can significantly affect a person’s quality of life if left untreated.
“The thyroid produces hormones that help regulate how the body uses energy. When hormone production becomes too low or too high, it can disrupt several systems in the body,” he said.
Common Thyroid Conditions
According to health experts, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are the most frequently diagnosed thyroid disorders.
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces insufficient hormones, slowing down the body’s metabolism. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, results from excessive hormone production, causing body processes to accelerate.
Other thyroid-related conditions include goitre, a swelling or enlargement of the thyroid gland, and thyroid cancer.
Medical professionals note that diagnosing thyroid disorders based on symptoms alone can be challenging because many warning signs overlap with other health conditions.
Symptoms Often Mistaken for Everyday Stress
Experts say many people dismiss thyroid-related symptoms as stress, aging, hormonal fluctuations, or lifestyle issues, delaying medical attention.
Some of the most common warning signs include persistent tiredness, unexplained weight gain or weight loss, increased sensitivity to cold or heat, changes in heart rate, anxiety, depression, and irregular menstrual cycles.
Health specialists warn that while these symptoms may initially appear mild, they should not be ignored when they persist over time.
“Many patients live with these symptoms for months or even years without realising they may be linked to a thyroid problem,” Dr Mohammed explained.
Who Faces Greater Risk?
Although thyroid disorders can affect anyone, certain groups are considered more vulnerable.
Individuals with a family history of thyroid disease, people living with autoimmune conditions, postpartum women, and those who have previously undergone thyroid treatment are at increased risk.
Medical experts also point to hormonal changes, certain medications containing high levels of iodine, and environmental factors as possible contributors to thyroid dysfunction.
Lifestyle habits such as smoking, prolonged exposure to stress, radiation exposure, and inadequate or excessive iodine intake have also been associated with an increased likelihood of developing thyroid-related conditions.
Importance of Early Diagnosis
Doctors stress that early diagnosis remains one of the most effective ways to prevent complications associated with thyroid disorders.
Diagnosis typically begins with a clinical assessment, during which healthcare providers evaluate symptoms and look for physical signs such as neck swelling, tremors, or abnormal heart rhythms.
Blood tests are commonly used to measure thyroid hormone levels and determine whether the gland is overactive or underactive. In some cases, imaging scans may be recommended to assess structural abnormalities or detect thyroid nodules.
Treatment and Management
Treatment options depend on the type and severity of the thyroid disorder. They may include hormone replacement therapy, medications to regulate hormone production, surgery, or radiation treatment.
In cases involving thyroid cancer, additional interventions such as chemotherapy may be required.
Health experts maintain that most thyroid disorders can be successfully managed when identified early, allowing patients to lead healthy and productive lives.
They advise individuals experiencing ongoing fatigue, unexplained weight changes, or other unusual symptoms to seek medical evaluation rather than attributing them solely to stress or lifestyle factors.
