Peter Obi Condemns Ethnic Profiling, Rejects Divisive Narratives

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned ethnic profiling in Nigeria, stressing that criminal behaviour should never be associated with any tribe or ethnic group.

Obi made the remarks while reacting to ongoing concerns about the rise of divisive narratives in public discourse, warning that such tendencies undermine national unity and deepen mistrust among citizens.

He stated that crime is an individual act and not a reflection of any ethnic identity, urging Nigerians to avoid generalisations that could inflame tensions or promote discrimination against innocent people.

According to him, the country’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a source of division, adding that unity and mutual respect remain essential for national progress and stability.

Obi called on citizens, political leaders, and opinion influencers to be more responsible in their public statements, especially when addressing sensitive issues related to security and crime.

He emphasized that inflammatory language and ethnic profiling can worsen existing social challenges and distract from efforts to address insecurity through collective action and cooperation.

The former presidential candidate also urged security agencies to focus on intelligence-led policing and fair investigations, ensuring that suspects are treated based on evidence rather than ethnic background.

He noted that Nigeria’s long-term development depends on building trust among its diverse communities and strengthening institutions that promote justice and equality.

Civil society groups have similarly raised concerns over the growing trend of ethnic stereotyping in discussions around crime and insecurity, warning that it could further polarize communities.

Obi reiterated his call for national unity, stating that Nigerians must work together to confront shared challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship.

He added that leadership at all levels must prioritize messages that promote peace, understanding, and cohesion among the country’s diverse population.

As debates continue over national security and social harmony, Obi’s comments have added to ongoing calls for more inclusive and responsible public communication across Nigeria.
