SDP Sango Ward holds emergency meeting amid party structural disputes
By Kingsley Ikechukwu

The Ogun State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) remains committed to upholding democratic values and law.
Ogun State, located in southwestern Nigeria, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant economy.
Known as the Gateway to Nigeria due to its strategic position bordering Lagos, the country’s commercial hub, Ogun State is home to a diverse array of industries and educational institutions.
The area is often celebrated for its historical significance, including landmarks like the Olumo Rock, which offers breathtaking views and insights into the region’s past.
Additionally, Ogun State’s natural beauty, with its lush greenery and serene landscapes, makes it a cherished destination for both locals and visitors.
The party’s political structure includes several hierarchical levels: State Executives, Senatorial Executives, Local Government Executives, Ward Executives, and Unit Executives.
Earlier this year, former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, joined the SDP.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that he brought thousands of supporters from various states, triggering internal power struggles within the party.
In Ogun State, Jimi Lawal, a prominent political figure, allegedly attempted to take control of the party structure.
Lawal is reported to have acquired 30,000 forged membership cards and offered millions of naira to the State Chairman.
These actions prompted concerns over the party’s integrity and legitimacy at the state level.
The alleged move by Lawal raised fears of a potential power grab and financial manipulation within the party.
To address these issues, a series of important meetings and consultations were held.
On March 22, 2024, the SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, met with key party figures in Abeokuta.
Former Youth and Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, also attended the meeting.
Together, they strongly condemned financial inducement, bribery, and manipulation of party structures for personal gain.
These meetings led to a crucial gathering in Ilaro on March 29, 2024.
The meeting included the five Local Government Chairmen, Secretaries, Youth Leaders, and Women Leaders from Ogun West Senatorial District.
At this gathering, the Senatorial Chairman was assigned the responsibility of communicating with the State Chairman.
The objective was to arrange a dialogue with Jimi Lawal to discuss potential reconciliation strategies for the party.
The proposed discussion aims to eliminate factionalism and integrate new members into the party.
By doing so, the party hopes to strengthen its electoral prospects for the 2027 elections and beyond.
In response to these developments, the Sango Ward held an emergency meeting to address local concerns.
Hon. Dr. Lawrence Kingsley I. Oluwakayode, the 2024 Sango Ward Councillorship Candidate, disclosed new issues arising within the ward.
As the Ado-Odo Ota Youth Leader and Sango Ward Coordinator, Oluwakayode emphasized the need for unity.
The meeting was convened to ensure that the ward’s members are fully informed and united in the face of challenges.
The Ward Chairperson acknowledged Jimi Lawal’s involvement with the party and emphasized legitimacy.
They assured members that the grassroots support for the SDP remains strong and committed to the party’s success.
The Chairperson stated that maintaining the party’s legitimacy and inclusivity is a priority for the leadership.
The emergency meeting highlighted the importance of preserving unity in the ward and at the state level.
Moving forward, the leadership of the SDP in Ogun State is focused on unity and inclusivity.
They believe that a unified party structure, free from factionalism, will strengthen the SDP’s position in the coming elections.
The party leadership is committed to organizing further consultations and reconciliation efforts among party members.
These efforts are intended to build a cohesive, effective team for the 2027 elections and beyond.
As the party continues to evolve, the priority is clear: to maintain unity and legitimacy at every level.
Only through such unity can the SDP hope to secure significant victories in future electoral contests.
