A thunderstorm struck the Obidi community in Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, killing three people.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) Four others were left seriously injured after the sudden lightning strike.

The incident occurred during a light evening rainfall that appeared normal to residents.

Eyewitnesses described the event as shocking and unlike anything they had ever experienced.

According to a resident, the lightning struck without any sign of severe weather.

“It was just a light rainfall, yet three people were struck by lightning and they died instantly,” the resident said.

The four injured victims suffered varying degrees of burns and trauma caused by the lightning.

They were immediately taken to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.

Medical staff confirmed that the injuries were consistent with high-voltage electrical burns caused by a natural lightning strike.

The victims are currently receiving care, and doctors are monitoring their recovery closely.

The community is in a state of mourning and confusion following the tragic event.

Many residents expressed disbelief that such a deadly incident could happen under calm weather conditions.

Local leaders have begun spiritual consultations to understand if there are any deeper meanings behind the tragedy.

Some traditional leaders in the area believe such events can have spiritual or ancestral significance.

Native priests and spiritual advisors have been invited to offer insights and calm the fears of residents.

The incident has caused widespread panic, with many people staying indoors despite the mild weather since the event.

Community events, school activities, and markets have seen reduced activity out of fear.

The Imo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed it will investigate the event.

Officials from SEMA are expected to visit Obidi community to assess the damage and offer support.

Residents are being advised to take safety precautions during rainfall, regardless of how light or harmless it may seem.

Experts warn that lightning is unpredictable and can strike without warning during any rainfall.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has previously warned that climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather.

Southeastern Nigeria, including Imo State, experiences seasonal thunderstorms, especially during the March to October rainy season.

These storms are often accompanied by lightning, heavy winds, and occasional flooding.

Obidi community, a rural settlement in the Agwa clan, is surrounded by dense vegetation and small farmlands.

The area lacks modern lightning protection systems, making it more vulnerable to natural electrical discharges.

Residents rely heavily on traditional buildings, which may offer little protection against sudden lightning strikes.

Thunderstorms are more likely to cause fatalities in such areas due to exposed rooftops and lack of shelter infrastructure.

This tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need for safety awareness and early warning systems in rural communities.

As Nigeria continues to face the effects of climate variability, experts urge better public education on weather-related safety.

Local authorities have promised to support the victims’ families and prevent future occurrences through awareness programs.

The state government is also expected to issue an official statement and policy response to enhance community safety.

This incident adds to the growing number of lightning-related fatalities in Nigeria in recent years.
