United States President marked his 80th birthday on Sunday with an unusual celebration a major UFC event staged on the White House lawn.
The event, branded “UFC Freedom 250,” was organised as part of activities commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence.
It featured top mixed martial arts fighters competing inside a specially constructed Octagon set up on the South Lawn.
Thousands of spectators attended the event, which also included military exhibitions, historical displays and a fireworks show.
Trump, who has maintained a long-standing relationship with the UFC and frequently attends its events, described the occasion as a unique way to celebrate the country’s milestone anniversary.
“This is going to be an event you’re really going to like,” he had said during an earlier meeting with participating fighters.
White House officials said the UFC covered all costs associated with hosting the event.
The celebration, however, drew criticism from some quarters. Opponents questioned the appropriateness of the spectacle at a time when many Americans are grappling with economic challenges and as tensions with Iran continue to dominate international headlines.
Responding to the criticism, UFC Chief Content Officer Craig Borsari said the event was designed to celebrate American culture and athletic achievement rather than serve any political purpose.
The occasion also attracted widespread attention because it coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday, making it one of the most unconventional presidential birthday celebrations in recent American history.
The festivities came just months after Trump presided over a large-scale military parade in Washington as part of events marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remained ongoing on Sunday, though officials had yet to announce any breakthrough in negotiations.
