Trump sparks outrage with AI pope image post
DDM News

United States President Donald Trump has come under fire after posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), the controversial image was uploaded on Friday night via his Truth Social account, sparking outrage from Catholics, social media users, and political observers across the globe.
The backlash stems from the timing of the post, which came just days after the death of Pope Francis, who passed away in April 2025.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church.
He was elected on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and served until his death at the age of 88.
The Vatican confirmed that the late pontiff died from complications linked to a stroke and heart failure.
His funeral drew dignitaries from all over the world, including Trump, who had previously made headlines for his strained relationship with the Vatican during his presidency.
In the image posted by Trump, he appears in full papal regalia, including the mitre and white robes typically worn by the Pope.
Critics accused the former U.S. leader of mocking the Catholic Church and showing deep insensitivity to the mourning period.
“This is disgusting and entirely offensive,” one social media user commented.
Another stated, “This is disrespectful to the Church and God himself. He’s literally the antichrist.”
A third user posted, “How dare you mock the process we Catholics go through to pick a new pope?”
Many users interpreted the act as an example of Trump’s alleged narcissism, claiming he was attempting to elevate himself even in religious symbolism.
Some described the image as a direct insult to Catholic doctrine and traditions.
Religious leaders and commentators have also weighed in, with many calling on Trump to apologise and take the post down.
Meanwhile, the Vatican has announced that the conclave to elect a new pope will commence on Wednesday, May 7.
Among those eligible to vote is Nigerian Cardinal Peter Okpaleke, the only African cardinal participating in the historic conclave.
As of now, Trump has not issued a statement in response to the widespread criticism.
