The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has called for a full investigation into the death of a woman during the Accord Party’s primary election held in Iwo.
The deceased, identified as Taliat Simbiat, reportedly died during the exercise, which the APC claims was marred by violence and unrest.
The party alleged that several people were injured during the primary and urged security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the APC Governorship Campaign Council described reports from the exercise as disturbing, alleging that dozens of people sustained injuries while property was damaged during the event.
The party’s spokesperson, Remi Omowaiye, said the death of Simbiat and the reported injuries suffered by others should not be ignored, stressing that justice must be served regardless of political affiliations.
However, Governor Ademola Adeleke rejected claims that the woman was killed during violence. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor said Simbiat suddenly slumped and died during the primary election.
Adeleke expressed sadness over her death, describing her as a loyal supporter and one of the administration’s strongest advocates in Iwo and surrounding communities.
The governor also dismissed allegations that his administration shields political thugs, insisting that his political career has always been guided by peaceful engagement and respect for democratic processes.
While extending condolences to the deceased’s family, Adeleke reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the state.
The incident has triggered fresh political exchanges between the ruling government and the opposition as preparations for future elections continue in Osun State.
