2027: “Heads will roll if votes are rigged”- Aisha Yesufu

Renowned activist Aisha Yesufu has issued a bold and fiery warning to Nigeria’s political class and INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She cautioned that any attempt to rig the forthcoming elections would be met with severe resistance and consequences.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the statement was made during a book launch focused on Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, broadcast on Symfoni TV.

Yesufu, a leading voice in Nigeria’s civic activism and a key figure in the OBIdient movement, did not mince words in her message.

She said that the struggle for credible elections goes beyond party politics, describing it as a matter of life and death for the country’s democratic survival.

In her emotionally charged speech, Yesufu declared:

“It’s not about Mr. Peter Obi. It’s about me, it’s about you. It’s about our votes being counted and recorded truthfully.”

She further warned that no institution, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), should undermine the will of the people.

“Anybody born of a woman — whether it is INEC or any other institution — has no right to thwart our votes,” she said.

Her comments come in the wake of lingering controversies surrounding the 2023 general elections.

Those elections were marred by accusations of widespread irregularities, delays in electronic transmission of results, and cases of voter suppression.

Supporters of the Labour Party and other democracy advocates have consistently alleged that the electoral process lacked transparency.

Yesufu, who has been an unwavering supporter of Peter Obi, condemned the silence of political elites on the sanctity of the ballot.

She blamed the repeated hijacking of democratic processes for the persistent instability and poverty plaguing the country.

“People are dying because elections are stolen,” she declared. “I’m not here to play games. Anybody wey say he wan rig our election — we die there!”

This fiery statement has reignited the national conversation on electoral integrity as Nigeria prepares for another round of general elections in 2027.

Many civil society actors and youth organizations have echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the need for proactive civic engagement.

Observers believe the 2027 elections will be a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy, especially after the bruising and divisive 2023 polls.

Yesufu also called on citizens to defend their democratic rights with vigilance and unity.

The activist noted that election rigging not only steals mandates but also endangers lives and deepens national suffering.
