US Closes Embassy Offices in Nigeria—Here’s Why

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its offices in Abuja and Lagos on Friday, July 4, 2025, in observance of U.S. Independence Day.

The embassy said the closure will affect all routine consular services, including visa processing, passport applications, and other non-emergency services.

The U.S. Independence Day, commemorated annually on July 4, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the 13 American colonies formally declared freedom from British rule.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria will be closed on July 4 to celebrate Independence Day. Regular consular operations will resume on Monday, July 7,” the embassy confirmed in a brief statement.

While regular services will be suspended, the embassy and consulate assured that emergency services such as assistance for U.S. citizens in distress will remain available through designated emergency contact lines.

The embassy encouraged individuals with urgent needs to consult its official website or contact the consular emergency hotline for immediate support.
