(DDM) – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced an urgent review of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates following the detection of technical glitches in its result processing system.

The Council confirmed that it has temporarily withheld access to the results on its online checker portal to allow for a comprehensive investigation and necessary corrections.

DDM gathered that the WASSCE is the primary standardized examination for senior secondary school students across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia.

It is a critical gateway for university admission and professional career opportunities, making the integrity of its results a matter of national and regional importance.

WAEC explained that the issue is linked to paper serialization, a security innovation introduced to strengthen the authenticity of exam papers and prevent malpractice.

The method ensures each exam paper is unique and traceable, aligning with global best practices for core subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.

However, internal checks revealed flaws in the serialization process, which caused inconsistencies and errors in some candidates’ scores.

As a result, WAEC decided to halt the release of results until the anomalies are corrected to ensure that every candidate’s performance is accurately reflected.

The Council’s public affairs department issued an apology to affected students, parents, and the general public for the inconvenience caused. It assured that all corrections would be completed within 24 hours.

Candidates who have already viewed their results but suspect irregularities are advised to recheck once the review process is complete.

WAEC stressed that fairness, transparency, and integrity remain central to its mandate and that restoring public confidence is its top priority.

The body urged for patience and understanding, noting that the use of advanced digital processes in examinations brings both improvements in security and new technical challenges.

Experts say the swift intervention by WAEC is a necessary step to preserve its decades-long reputation as a trusted examination body in West Africa.

In its concluding statement, the Council reaffirmed that no student should suffer an unfair score due to technical shortcomings, and pledged to continue refining its systems to prevent a repeat of such issues.

Educational stakeholders are watching closely as WAEC works to ensure a seamless and credible outcome for the 2025 WASSCE candidates.
