ASABA, DELTA STATE — The Diaspora Network Leader of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth C. Gbandi, has called on Nigerians to hold elected leaders accountable for their campaign promises, citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s previous pledge to improve electricity supply and eliminate estimated billing across the country.

Speaking in Asaba on Tuesday, Gbandi said he was embarking on an advocacy tour across communities in Delta North Senatorial District to remind residents of what he described as a public commitment made by the president regarding power sector reforms.

According to him, Tinubu had promised Nigerians that his administration would tackle persistent electricity challenges and end the controversial estimated billing system that has remained a major source of complaints among electricity consumers.

Gbandi argued that many Nigerians are still grappling with irregular power supply and billing concerns, despite assurances that significant improvements would be achieved. He maintained that public officials should be assessed based on the promises they make and the results delivered while in office.

The ADC chieftain said democratic accountability requires citizens to evaluate leaders using measurable outcomes rather than political rhetoric. He noted that access to stable electricity remains one of the most important issues affecting households, businesses, and economic growth across the country.

According to him, reliable power supply is essential for industrial development, job creation, and improved living standards. He added that many small and medium-scale enterprises continue to struggle with high operating costs due to dependence on alternative power sources.

Gbandi stated that his message was not directed at any individual alone but was intended to encourage a culture of accountability in governance. He stressed that elected officials must be reminded of their commitments and encouraged to fulfill them in the interest of the people.

The ADC leader further urged citizens to remain actively engaged in the democratic process, emphasizing that public participation is necessary to strengthen governance and ensure that campaign promises translate into tangible benefits.

He argued that the electorate has a responsibility to assess the performance of public office holders before making future voting decisions. According to him, democratic institutions function more effectively when leaders know they will be judged by their record in office.

The remarks come amid ongoing national conversations about electricity supply, power sector reforms, and consumer complaints relating to estimated billing practices. Stakeholders have repeatedly called for accelerated metering programmes and improved infrastructure to address challenges within the sector.

As political activities gradually build toward the 2027 general elections, issues such as electricity, economic development, and public service delivery are expected to feature prominently in discussions between political parties, government officials, and voters across the country.
