ABEOKUTA, Ogun State — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its appeal in the state ahead of the 2027 governorship election, citing internal divisions within the opposition party and the APC’s performance in office as factors that have shifted political favour toward the ruling party.
The chieftain, who spoke to journalists on Thursday in Abeokuta, argued that the PDP is no longer the party of choice for voters in Ogun State, pointing to what he described as a series of missteps and internal crises that have weakened the opposition’s ability to mount a credible challenge. He noted that the APC has made significant strides in infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, and education, which have resonated with voters across the state.
“Ogun State has moved on from the PDP. The party is in disarray, and the people have seen the difference between what the APC is doing and what the PDP offers,” the chieftain said. “The internal squabbles, the lack of a clear vision, and the failure to present a united front have cost the PDP its relevance in this state.”
The chieftain also highlighted the achievements of the APC administration in Ogun State, including road construction, agricultural development, and investment in education, which he said have improved the quality of life for residents. He argued that these accomplishments would translate into electoral support for the APC in the 2027 governorship election.
The PDP has yet to respond to the chieftain’s claims. However, party sources have indicated that the opposition is working to resolve its internal differences and present a united front ahead of the election. The PDP has also been critical of the APC’s performance, accusing the ruling party of failing to address the state’s security and economic challenges.
Political analysts have noted that Ogun State remains a competitive battleground, with both the APC and the PDP commanding significant support bases. However, the APC chieftain’s comments reflect the growing confidence among ruling party members as the 2027 election approaches.
The APC has been consolidating its position in Ogun State, with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration implementing several projects aimed at boosting the state’s economy and infrastructure. The party has also been working to strengthen its grassroots structure and mobilise support ahead of the election.
As the 2027 governorship election draws closer, the APC is expected to continue its campaign to position itself as the party of choice in Ogun State, while the PDP works to rebuild its image and present a credible alternative. For now, the APC chieftain’s declaration has set the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested election in the Gateway State.
