Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has addressed criticism surrounding his relationship with Seyi Tinubu, clarifying that their connection is purely personal and predates the current administration.
The singer made the clarification on his social media platform X after facing backlash from some users who questioned his political stance following his comments on insecurity in Nigeria.
Earlier, Davido had expressed concern over the rising wave of insecurity in the country, calling on fellow entertainers to use their platforms to speak out against injustice.
“I’m weak, God, please take control. We can’t continue like this. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. This is messed up. I can’t lie, we entertainers are failing, including me. We need to speak up. There is too much injustice going on,” he wrote.
However, his statement sparked criticism from some social media users, who accused him of hypocrisy and alleged that he was affiliated with the City Boy Movement, a political group supporting President Bola Tinubu.
Responding to the claims, Davido firmly denied any political affiliation. While acknowledging his long-standing friendship with Seyi Tinubu, he emphasised that the relationship is not political in nature.
“I am not part of any City Boy group. When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me. I’ve been friends with Seyi Tinubu for years, and that’s where it stops. I call and complain to him all the time, even in person,” he stated.
His response has since sparked conversations online, with many users debating the role of celebrities in political discourse and whether personal relationships should influence public perception of their views.
