Delta Students to Represent Nigeria at Global Spelling Bee in China

ASABA, Delta State — Two students from Delta State, Chinedu Great Okediachi and Oghenetano Idoghor of Madonna International School, Asaba, have qualified to represent Nigeria and Africa at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China after outstanding performances at the African championship.

The students earned their place on the global stage following strong showings at the African Spelling Bee Championship held in Harare, Zimbabwe, where they ranked among the best performers in the competition. Okediachi emerged as Africa’s first runner-up, while Idoghor also delivered an impressive performance that contributed to their joint qualification for the international event.

Their inspiring journey began at the state qualifiers held at Bumi School, Warri, where they distinguished themselves among hundreds of contestants. Their outstanding performance earned them qualification for the national finals in Port Harcourt, where they competed against some of Nigeria’s brightest young minds before securing the prestigious opportunity to represent Nigeria at the continental championship.

Their achievement has been widely praised, with many describing it as a reflection of the growing standard of education and academic excellence among Nigerian students. In recognition of their exceptional accomplishments, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved financial support to facilitate their participation in the global competition scheduled to take place in China in July 2026. Commissioner for Works (Rural) and Public Information, Hon Charles Aniagwu, reportedly played a key role in drawing the Governor’s attention to the students’ accomplishments and the importance of supporting their participation at the forthcoming global championship.

The gesture underscores the state government’s commitment to promoting education and investing in human capital development by supporting young talents to excel on the global stage. Officials noted that the two students would join some of the world’s brightest young scholars at the Spelling Bee World Cup, where they will represent not only Delta State but also Nigeria and the African continent.

Education stakeholders have hailed the Governor’s approval as timely and visionary, noting that it will allow the students to focus fully on preparations for the global competition while proudly carrying the flags of Delta State and Nigeria on the world stage.
