LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigerian musician and activist Falz has criticised the Federal Government over worsening insecurity and economic hardship, saying political leaders have failed to show sufficient concern for the welfare and safety of ordinary citizens.

Falz made the remarks while addressing demonstrators during a June 12 protest in Lagos, where a coalition of civil society organisations, labour unions, youth groups, community associations, and faith-based organisations gathered to express dissatisfaction with the state of governance in the country.

The entertainer said Nigeria is currently facing a disturbing rise in kidnappings, killings, and general insecurity, arguing that the situation reflects a broader failure of leadership. He lamented that citizens continue to live in fear despite repeated assurances from authorities.

He cited several recent incidents of abductions across the country, including cases involving students and relatives of public figures, stressing that insecurity affects all Nigerians regardless of social or political status. According to him, the value of human life must be equal, and stronger efforts are needed to ensure the protection of every citizen.

Falz further accused political leaders of neglecting the needs of ordinary people, saying the disconnect between government officials and citizens has worsened public frustration. He stated that the continued rise in insecurity and hardship has left many Nigerians disillusioned about governance and national progress.

While speaking on the broader political climate, he noted that widespread dissatisfaction with current conditions is evident among citizens. However, he refrained from making predictions about future elections, instead emphasising that democratic processes remain the most viable means for citizens to express their grievances.

The protest formed part of a nationwide civic action organised by multiple groups to mark June 12, a date symbolically linked to Nigeria’s democratic history. Participants used the occasion to demand improved security, economic relief, and accountability from government institutions.

Organisers of the demonstration said the action was intended to highlight the growing challenges facing Nigerians, particularly rising living costs, unemployment, and insecurity, which they argue have significantly worsened quality of life across the country.

Falz reaffirmed his belief in democratic participation, stating that citizens ultimately retain the power to influence leadership choices through elections, while urging greater accountability and responsiveness from those in authority.
