FBI: We intercepted Iranian plot to assassinate Donald Trump
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has, on November 8, 2024, claimed that they intercepted a plot by the Iranian government to assassinate the president-elect of the United States, Mr. Donald Trump.
Another United States agency, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said that the Iranian agent accused of plotting to assassinate Mr. Trump is Farjad Shakeri.
The suspect — Shakeri, the DOJ said, is still “at large and is believed to reside in Iran.”
The U.S. government indicted the Iranian agent accused of leading a network to assassinate the president-elect.
According to the FBI, the plot was on the orders of the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Hosseini Khamenei.
Khamenei is an Iranian cleric and politician who has served as the second supreme leader of Iran.
In the meantime, the U.S. secret service has deployed robotic dogs at the property of Donald Trump as security measures increase following his election victory.
Who is Donald Trump?
Donald Trump has been a prominent figure in American politics and business for many years.
He served as the 45th President of the United States from 2017 to 2021 and was recently re-elected for a second, non-consecutive term.
The term is set to begin in January 2025.
His political career has been marked by significant events and controversies.
These include his recent victory in Texas, which reaffirmed the state’s strong Republican support.
Previous attack recorded by FBI
Donald Trump had been, on July 14, 2024, shot while giving a speech at a rally in Pennsylvania.
According to eyewitnesses, Trump was shot on stage and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he recovered from the injuries.
The incident occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, while speaking to a large crowd of supporters.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with many in attendance screaming and running for cover.
The shooter was shortly thereafter apprehended, according to the FBI.
One month later, on August 23, Ronald Lee Syvrud, a 66-year-old Arizona man, was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill Trump on social media.
The threats came as Trump visited the US-Mexico border in Cochise County, where Syvrud lives.
Syvrud, a registered sex offender in Wisconsin, is also wanted for failing to register in Arizona and faces additional charges.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) had reported how the former President narrowly escaped an assassination plot.
Trump had escaped death in an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania.
FBI apprehended Syvrud in connection with online threats made against Trump over the past two weeks.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday afternoon that Syvrud was taken into custody within the county.
Taliban hopeful about Trump’s presidency
In the meantime, on November 8, the Taliban interim government in Afghanistan has expressed strong hope towards a lenient Afghanistan-United States relations.
The spokesperson for Afghan’s interim government’s foreign ministry, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, made the remarks on X, formerly Twitter.
Taliban made the statement in response to Donald Trump’s win in the recently held U.S. presidential election.
Balkhi stated that Taliban hopes Trump’s re-election will usher in a new era of ties between the two countries.
Following the election results, he issued a statement on X with the headline “Statement regarding U. S. election results”.
He said that he hoped the future administration would take a practical stance in order to strengthen relations between the two sides.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan, in line with its balanced foreign policy, expresses hope that following the announcement of the U. S. election results, the incoming U. S. administration will adopt a pragmatic approach to ensure tangible advancement in bilateral relations, allowing both nations to open a new chapter of relations grounded in mutual agreement”, he had stated.
The spokesperson also mentioned the 2020 Doha peace agreement with the United States, which was struck under Trump.
According to him, the accord ended the 20-year occupation of Afghanistan.
Russian, Iranian plot to sabotage U.S. election — FBI
Earlier, on the eve of the U.S. presidential election, the country’s intel agencies, including FBI, alleged that Russian and Iran plotted to sabotage the polls.
The US intelligence community had warned that foreign adversaries, particularly Russia and Iran.
The agencies said they are escalating efforts to undermine election confidence and fuel American divisions.
“Russia is the most active threat,” say the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, FBI, and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
Russia-linked actors had allegedly spread fake content to instill fear in the electorates.
They also suggest violence among Americans due to political differences and erode trust in the election.
The agency said: “We anticipate Russian actors will release additional manufactured content with these themes through Election Day and in the days and weeks after polls close.”
This includes inciting violence, even against election officials says FBI reports.
Iran also remains a significant threat, having conducted malicious cyber activities against former President Trump’s campaign.
The IC added that Iran “also remains a significant foreign influence threat.”
The agencies previously determined that Iran “conducted malicious cyber activities to compromise former President Trump’s campaign.”
The United States held the election on November 5, 2024.
