Governorship candidate challenges Deputy governor’s impeachment in Nigeria

An opposition party governorship candidate, Dr. Udoh Oberaifo (pictured), has chosen the recent impeachment of a deputy governor in Edo, a state he is vying for to be the governor in Nigeria, as campaign point.
Obaraifo, gubernatorial candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), strongly criticized the impeachment of former deputy governor, comrade Philip Shaibu by the Edo House of Assembly.
In a statement in Benin, the state’s capital, Oberaifo contended that the impeachment did not follow due process, even if there were charges against Shaibu.
He highlighted that Shaibu was not given a fair hearing, deeming the impeachment as a clear violation of justice principles.
Oberaifo pointed out that the impeachment proceeded despite a pending case filed by the deputy governor at the Federal High court.
He questioned the motives behind the hurried proceedings and raised concerns about the lack of adherence to legal processes.
Moreover, Oberaifo raised an alarm about the alleged connection between the Labour Party (LP) and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
He claimed that the new deputy governor was still a member of LP when sworn in, which contradicts the Electoral Act 2022. He accused the LP and PDP of collaborating to hold onto power.
He condemned the political maneuvering and warned against entrenched godfatherism in Edo politics. Oberaifo urged the people of Edo state to reject the PDP and LP in the September 2024 polls and support the AAC as a viable alternative.
He called on all Edolites to back the AAC, embrace its programs, visions, and manifestos, and vote for him as the next governor of the state in September.
