Grandmother trades six chickens to keep girl in school
DDM News

A touching story has emerged from a rural Nigerian community, where a grandmother took an extraordinary step to keep her granddaughter in school.
The elderly woman, whose name has not yet been disclosed, reportedly brought six live chickens to her granddaughter’s school as payment for school fees after the child had been sent home.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the grandmother, who has no formal education herself, took this bold step because she understands the importance of education, especially for the girl child.
Eyewitnesses say the woman arrived at the school gates with the chickens tied together with a rope, pleading with the management to accept them in place of money.
“She said she didn’t want her granddaughter to miss school,” a community member told DDM.
“She sold nothing else.
“Those chickens were all she had.”
The grandmother reportedly lives in deep poverty and depends on a modest backyard poultry to sustain herself.
She may never witness the long-term benefits of her sacrifice, but that did not stop her from acting.
She is not even the mother of the girl, but the grandmother, a guardian driven by sheer determination and love.
People in the village say she likely never attended school herself.
Still, she has seen how education has helped others around her break free from poverty and hopelessness.
For her, letting her granddaughter remain out of school was not an option.
Though she couldn’t raise cash, she offered the most valuable items she had, her chickens.
It is unknown how the school authorities handled the gesture.
However, the story has captured hearts nationwide and has prompted calls for intervention.
Advocates have urged government agencies, NGOs, and individuals to support the girl’s education going forward.
The grandmother’s action has been described as more than a widow’s mite.
It is a powerful example of sacrifice, hope, and the unbreakable belief that education can change lives.
Her story serves as a reminder of the price many are still paying for basic education in Nigeria.
