Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to step down, arguing that the President no longer has the capacity to tackle Nigeria’s growing challenges.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor said the country requires a leader with the energy, commitment and focus to address its mounting economic and security problems.
Obi claimed that Tinubu, who served as governor of Lagos State, is no longer the same leader Nigerians once knew.
“The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today. He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home,” Obi said.
He further criticised the administration’s performance, insisting that Nigeria was heading in the wrong direction under Tinubu’s leadership.
“As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. The man should just step aside. He doesn’t have the capacity to do the job,” he added.
Turning to the country’s economic situation, Obi accused political leaders of focusing on the wrong issues while millions of Nigerians struggle with poverty and insecurity.
He cited recent international reports indicating that poverty and hunger remain major concerns, saying these should dominate the national conversation ahead of the 2027 general election.
“The issues before us are poverty, hunger, insecurity and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians,” Obi said. “We should be discussing the growing number of out-of-school children, the state of our healthcare system and how public resources are being managed, instead of being distracted by politics.”
He maintained that the 2027 election should centre on practical solutions to the challenges affecting citizens, including rising food insecurity, widespread kidnappings and economic hardship.
