Peter Obi urges transport safety after Abuja–Kaduna train accident

(DDM) – Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed heartfelt sympathy to victims of the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Obi took to his official X handle to convey his concern, noting that while the incident was traumatic, it was fortunate no lives were lost.

He commended God for sparing lives and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured during the accident, which has once again sparked debates over Nigeria’s transport safety measures.

Obi stressed that the derailment should serve as a wake-up call to authorities to prioritise safety across the transport sector, particularly in rail infrastructure, which plays a critical role in national development.

“My heartfelt sympathy goes to all those who sustained injuries and were traumatised by the accident,” Obi wrote.

“We are grateful that no life was lost, and I pray for the quick recovery of the injured,” he added.

The Labour Party leader further urged relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the derailment thoroughly, ensure prompt medical care for the injured, and restore public confidence in rail transport.

He emphasised that the safety and well-being of citizens must always remain a top priority for any government that seeks to enhance economic growth through improved infrastructure.

Rail transport in Nigeria has faced recurring challenges, including security threats, vandalism, and maintenance lapses, leading to growing concerns among commuters.

This derailment, though not fatal, underscores the pressing need for proactive measures to ensure efficiency, reliability, and safety in the system.

Observers believe Obi’s statement reflects a wider public sentiment demanding accountability and urgent reforms within Nigeria’s transportation network.
