Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has voiced strong concerns over what she describes as the steady decline of Nigeria’s political system, warning that the integrity once associated with public service has significantly eroded.
In a candid and emotionally charged statement, the actress lamented that politics in Nigeria has been reduced to what she termed “a dumping ground for people who swim in illusions,” where individuals without competence, credibility, or vision now freely contest for leadership positions.
According to Edochie, there was a time when aspiring political office holders were subjected to strict scrutiny and thorough evaluation before being deemed fit to serve the public. She noted that even candidates vying for local government roles were once required to meet defined standards and demonstrate capacity.
“Politics has been badly degraded; anything and everything can now come out to contest, even with nothing to offer. You no get integrity and capacity, so hide your face biko,” she said.
Reflecting on the past, the actress stressed that Nigeria’s political space once demanded excellence and accountability, but has now shifted to a system where ambition often outweighs qualification.
“When Nigeria was Nigeria, every contestant had to have a concrete evaluation and must be equal to the task before coming out to contest for any small political office. But today, almost anyone can run for office, regardless of competence, vision, or what they have to offer the people,” she added.
Edochie questioned how the nation arrived at a point where leadership positions are increasingly occupied by individuals driven more by self-interest than a genuine desire to serve.
Despite her criticism, she maintained a tone of cautious optimism, encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful even amid the challenges facing the country. She also called for prayers and support for those still in captivity, emphasizing the need for both faith and collective action.
Her remarks add to the growing number of voices calling for reform and a return to accountability in Nigeria’s political system.
